This choice of materials allows it to be strong, but still lightweight. Materials used on the machine include brushed aluminum, as well as a magnesium reinforced display enclosure. The stylish design and attractive silver look deviates from the often uninspired designs of other business laptops, and on top of that, it is made to last. Released earlier this year, the Elitebook 8440p is an attractive machine that will turn a few heads.

With the quality image it puts out, people working from home can do video conferencing. Among the features I liked most on the machine was the 2.0 megapixel webcam, which is better than most webcams you’ll find on business laptops. Its portability is increased by the very agreeable dimensions of 13.21 x 9.3 x 1.23 inches. Starting at just 4.7 pounds, the EliteBook 8440p is extremely portable and won’t be a burden to carry. With businesses often passing down laptops from person to person, who don’t always treat them properly, these type of quality materials go a long way to extending the lifetime of a laptop.
As far as storage, the machine I tested had a hard drive that would store up to 250 GB, though that can be upgraded to as much as 500 GB if you’re willing to pay a little extra. The only time I had any issues is when I tried to watch some 1080p HD video online, and there were occasional delays in the video. The very fast 2.40 GHz Intel Core i5-520M processor, with a Mobile Intel QM57 Express chipset, does not disappoint, and during my time with the machine I always got whatever I was doing finished in a timely manner. Even in nonbusiness settings, though, this Webcam will offer quality visuals for conversation with family and friends through Skype and other services.
Regarding the screen itself, you’ll get a 14.0″ LED-backlit HD anti-glare screen that offers quality images and 1366 x 768 resolution. An optical drive for playing and recording CDs and DVDs is included, and can be upgraded to Blu-ray if you wish. The machine has 2GB of RAM, but you can upgrade that if desired, as the machine is customizable.
This program gives the user tips about customization of power settings that can help reduce the amount of power expended. There is some relief here, though, as the computer features the HP Power Assistant utility. My experience was about half that long before the battery was gone. The battery life is listed at up to 6 hours and 30 minutes, but I didn’t get close to that. This extended flexibility allows the user more options when adjusting the screen due to lighting situations, such as when you are outdoors.
Directional keys are placed on the right, though there is no separate number pad. The keyboard was easy to use, amply sized and well-designed. Even on an individual level, you can make the battery last longer and charge it less, saving money in the process. This is especially good for businesses that might be monitoring how efficiently their employees are using the equipment given to them. You’ll see exact watt-hour usage, and report details back.
The size didn’t bother me, though. The multi-touch trackpad was very responsive, though a bit smaller than trackpads I’ve seen on other machines. There was, however, a little LED light up top, next to the webcam, that could be turned on for a little more illumination. I was disappointed, though, that the keyboard isn’t backlit, which makes it much harder to work in darker locations.
Touch-sensitive icons representing volume controls (up, down, mute) are subtly placed on the top of the keyboard. Audio from the integrated speakers was not very impressive, but I wasn’t expecting too much since it’s more of a business machine and not focused on multimedia or entertainment. For people traveling on business who may have to step away from their computers at conferences, for example, this is a good way of letting people to know your computer is off limits. Another good feature for business users is that the computer locks when you close it. I never took to it, and didn’t think it was very easy to control, but if you like it, it’s there.
As I touched on before, durability is the key with this unit. There are separate audio-in and audio-out jacks for headphones and microphones. There is no HDMI port, as HP decided to go with a DisplayPort instead, which may disappoint some users. There are a wide variety of ports on the EliteBook 8440p that will satisfy most users, including 3 USB ports, 1 eSATA/USB combo port for faster data transfer, an ethernet jack and a modem, among others.
Microsoft Office Professional 2007 is included as a 60-day trial, but must then be purchased. There is a UV coating on keyboard itself, which will make the keys last much longer without showing wear. Testing for reaction to vibration, dust, humidity, altitude, high temperatures and more make this a good option for road warriors who don’t know what climate and setting they’ll be in from day to day.
QuickWeb works similarly, offering browsing of the Web without a full boot. A couple unique features of note are Quicklook 3, which offers access to data from Outlook and calendar without fully booting up the system. The fingerprint sensor could be used by companies who are putting sensitive material on their computers. Other optional features are the HP Fingerprint Sensor, Smart Kensington Lock, HP Privacy Filter, and McAfee Security Solution. Optional security features, which must be purchased, include LoJack Pro for HP ProtectTools, which will locate your computer if it gets lost or stolen, similar to how LoJack for cars works. These include standard features like the Integrated Smart Card Reader, HP ProtectTools, TPM Embedded Security Chip 1.2, Enhanced Pre-Boot Security, HP Spare Key, HP Disk Sanitizer, Enhanced Drive Lock, Drive Encryption for HP ProtectTools, Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools, and File Sanitizer for HP ProtectTools.
The bottom line: The HP EliteBook 8440p is an attractive, solidly built machine that has the specs to back up its looks and durability. That’s not cheap, but for a product that’s going to last like this one, it’s a fair price. As far as price, you can get a basic version of the Elitebook 8440p for $979, but any adjustments or customizations will move that price over $1,000.
